Explaining Ecochallenge at The Tech

How might we use animation to promote environmentally sustainable habits to educators and their students?

The Tech Interactive’s new exhibition, Solve for Earth, comprises nine sections, one of which is dedicated to empowering guests with the confidence to act within their communities to build a sustainable future. Ecochallenge at The Tech, an exhibit in this group, encourages people to incorporate small, behavioral changes in their daily routines by teaming up with family and friends.

the task

While Ecochallenge at The Tech, the website, could be easily shared online, Ecochallenge on the gallery floor needed supplementary visuals to attract our target audience—young people and their educators—to the large format display. Here, they could learn more about the online platform and how they could participate. I proposed an explainer video, which I would independently illustrate, animate, and produce over the course of three months.

The outcome

The 38-second explainer video, my longest animation to date, debuted on The Tech Interactive’s social media channels to celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2021. Since then, we have seen registration increase by nearly ninefold. To further boost engagement on the gallery floor, software engineer Mike and I implemented a landing page that summarizes the collective impact of Ecochallenge actions, as well as a carousel of photos sent by participants. In showcasing the power of people coming together to solve big problems, we hope that visitors are inspired to protect the environment.
